A Variety of Ways to Eat Chestnuts

Chestnuts, unlike other nuts and seeds, are relatively low in calories; contain less fat but are rich in minerals, vitamins and phyto-nutrients that benefit health. Richly flavored, starchy, chestnuts are popular cool season edible nuts of the northern hemisphere. The nuts are native to hilly forest of China, Japan, Europe, and North America. United States is the chief importer of chestnuts from European Union, although China has been the largest exporter of nuts worldwide, especially to Japan.

Starchy
Chestnuts particular in starchy, rather low in fat. They are a good natural carbohydrate option for those who like to eat a little more starch, Sweet potatoes , yams especially chestnut is a good option. Their nutrition composition is almost similar to that of other staple starch foods such as sweet potato, sweet corn, potatoes, plantain, etc. Nevertheless, they are still good sources of minerals, vitamins and some good-quality protein.

Free in Gluten
Chestnuts, like hazelnuts and almonds, etc., are free in gluten. And for the same reason, they are one of the popular ingredients in the preparation of gluten-free food formulas for gluten-sensitive, wheat allergy, and celiac disease patients.

Chestnut Flour
They are rarely eaten raw and most often eaten roasted, but also sometimes boiled. A flour can also be made out of chestnuts and baked goods can be prepared with chestnut flour. In fact, chestnut flour can be used instead of almond flour in recipes calling for it.

Chestnut flour is probably a better idea than almond flour for baked goods because almond flour contains high amounts of fragile polyunsaturated fats that oxidize easily when in contact with a source of heat and that should be kept to a minimum on an healthy diet even if they are not oxidized.

Chestnut flour very popular in Italian cuisine and chestnut bread is common there. is also favored in many recipes such as polenta, sweet breads, biscuits, cakes, soups and ice-cream. For those who do enjoy moderate amounts of starchy vegetables though, chestnuts can be a wonderful addition.

Roasted Chestnuts
In countries where chestnuts are popular, you’ll often find street vendors selling freshly roasted chestnuts. If chestnuts are in season and are available at your local grocery store though, they are easy to roast and enjoy at home in the oven or around a campfire. They are normally in season from October to March.

Marron Glace
Marron glace is extremely popular in Europe where large sized, high quality European chestnuts  used. To prepare marron glace or glazed chestnuts, the nuts are soaked in water, then dipped and heated in gradual concentration of sugar-vanilla syrup for several days. Thus candied nuts are then subjected to dry under heat/sunlight before packing.
